PHOENIX – Cronkite News projects that Democratic former state Rep. Ruben Gallego will win his bid for a U.S House seat covering central Phoenix and much of the southwest Valley.
Early returns show Gallego with an insurmountable lead over competition that included no major party candidates in Congressional District 7.
Gallego decided to run for Congress after Rep. Ed Pastor, D-Phoenix, announced in February he would retire after 23 years.
Gallego beat competitors including Maricopa County Supervisor Mary Rose Wilcox in the primary for the heavily Democratic district.
During his tenure as a state representative, Gallego served as the assistant minority leader.
