PHOENIX – The number of childhood deaths attributable to abuse or maltreatment increased by 87 percent in Arizona over the last six years, according to a recent report. It came as the number of childhood deaths overall fell in the past year, from 854 in 2012 to 811 in 2013. Of those deaths, 38 percent were due to preventable causes – something that one local agency is working to change.
