Social media, high-profile sports cases shine light on domestic violence

PHOENIX – Recent high-profile cases of domestic violence involving professional athletes and a new openness by victims on social media about their abuse is helping shine an even brighter light on the crime this October, which is Domestic Violence Awareness Month. The Los Angeles Kings suspended defenseman Slava Voynov after his arrest on charges of domestic violence, while former Baltimore Raven running back Ray Rice is back in the news with an appeal of firing. But experts say the media attention and the courage of survivors who have gone public with their accounts of abuse has the potential to bring change to the problem.
