“Marching Forward” is a documentary about post-9/11 veterans’ journeys to recovery upon returning home from Iraq and Afghanistan. While prescription pills may work for many veterans with post-traumatic stress, News21 reporters Jake Stein and Bonnie Campo documented the lives of those opting for alternatives, ranging from yoga and acupuncture to medical marijuana, music and fly fishing. The 23-minute production transports viewers from Arizona’s red rock mountains and the high desert hills of New Mexico to Fort Bliss in Texas and the offices of VA researchers in Colorado. The VA, while dealing with a sweeping backlog and complaints of overprescribing medications, is spending tens of millions on research into complementary and alternative medicine. Through the voices of post-9/11 veterans, “Marching Forward” provides insight into this unexplored phenomenon.
