Supporters of Proposition 204 have gathered in an office near downtown Phoenix to await election results.

Ann-Eve Pedersen, the leader of the campaign for a permanent 1 cent-per-dollar sales tax benefiting education and other causes, said she’s expecting a close race. She noted that her campaign was vastly outspent in the last few weeks.

“It’s hard to know just how much damage was done,” she said.

Proposition 204 would raise an estimated $1 billion in its first year, with most of that money going toward education and with transportation and human services also as beneficiaries.

A temporary sales tax voters approved in 2010 to support education is scheduled to expire next year.
