Arizona voters have approved  a ballot measure to eliminate affirmative action programs by state and local governments.

Cronkite News bases its projection on unofficial returns showing Proposition 107 with a wide lead.

“I think that with the margin we saw here it’s clear that the people of Arizona believe in fair and equal treatment for everyone,” said Jennifer Gratz, spokeswoman for Yes on 107.
The proposition’s goal: amending Arizona’s  constitution to ban state government and municipalities from giving preferential treatment on the basis of sex, race, color, ethnicity or national origin.

It’s part of a wider campaign led by Ward Connerly, whose California-based American Civil Rights Institute has spearheaded efforts to shoot down affirmative action programs in several other states.
